From the 54N 20E confluence we drove via Morąg to Gietrzwałd – a pilgrimage site, called “Polish Lourdes”, where we visited a Marian Sanctuary, being just prepared for the annual church fair (September 10 – 11). Then we headed south and via Ostróda came to the battlefield of Grunwald (Tannenberg). One of the biggest battles in the Middle Ages took place in the surrounding fields – on July 15, 1410 the joint Polish-Lithuanian forces and their allies commanded by king Władysław Jagiełło defeated the army of the Knights of the Teutonic Order commanded by the Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen. The battle of Grunwald is regarded as one of the most important battles in the Polish history. There is a monument commemorating the victory at the battlefield and a small museum with an exhibition presenting the background and the course of the battle. In a small theater we watched a 20-minutes excerpt from the famous Polish movie “Krzyżacy” (“Knights of the Teutonic Order”) and even though the film was shot almost 50 years ago it still appealed to the audience.

From Grunwald, in hot afternoon sun, we went via Działdowo and Lipowiec Kościelny to Szreńsk, and then we headed south-west towards Bieżuń. Ca. 8 km past Szreńsk there is a signpost pointing to Małocin. I turned into a dirt road and in dust clouds came to the center of the village. GPS showed that there was ca. 300 m to the confluence. Between fences and hedges I reached a roadside cross and a cornfield stretching out behind it. Fortunately, the confluence point lay exactly at the edge of the field so we avoided struggling through the thicket . Our presence there raised some interest among local people, it turned out however that their questions were not about the confluence but about a new road that was planned to be built there. I took commemorative pictures and we returned to the car. With some difficulties, as the herd of cows was just returning from pastures and took up the whole width of the road, we came back to the main road and via Włocławek went to Poznań.

Skręciłem w polną drogę i w tumanach kurzu dojechałem do centrum wsi. Wykonałem pamiątkowe fotografie i wróciliśmy do samochodu. Z pewnymi trudnościami, gdyż przez wieś przechodziły właśnie stada krów wracających z pastwisk, powróciliśmy do głównej drogi i przez Włocławek pojechaliśmy do Poznania.
