#1: General area of the confluence point

(visited by Björn Weghenkel and Lena Katharina Schmidt)

04-Dec-2011 -- In order to get to the confluence point from our previous stay on Isla Bastimentos, we chose to hop off the bus to David at the respective turnoff and got to the town of Chiriquí Grande by taking a taxi from there.

Chiriquí Grande, located about 14 km from the confluence point and thus seeming to be the closest town accessible by land, turned out to be a small seaport: since it does not seem to be of much touristic interest, we had little information beforehand other than satellite pictures and the suspicion that some water taxis might provide transport to villages at the other end of the bay. However, this unfussy town and its friendly people were a more than welcome change to the very touristic Bocas del Toro we had visited before and it took us only some minutes to get in touch with some friendly and helpful people.

A mechanic offered to take us on his small boat and even though our intention of going to a seemingly random point in the middle of nowhere only to take some pictures may have seemed a little weird at first, the driver José and his assistant Luís happily agreed to drive us to the point and show us a bit of the bay on the way. Despite the wind and the rain of the previous and following days we had a sunny, comfortable and - thanks to Luís - informative trip on a very calm sea and it took us only half an hour to reach the point.

By then, even our two accomplices had gotten excited about the idea and we all started our journey back to Chiriquí Grande along the coastline in a happy mood, seeing little villages with palm-leaf-topped roofs, a Starship Enterprise-shaped cloud, and curious white birds which - as Luís pointed out - splashed into the water from several meters height in order to catch some fish.

While we had initially prepared to spend the night in Chiriquí Grande, everything turned out so well that it only took us a few hours to visit the confluence point and we were able to continue our journey to David the same day.
