First point in Finland

I have not hunted for a point for several years but cannot resist the idea of going after a point very near the Arctic Circle (66.3 N). My previous most northern point was 60 degree.

We spend four days in Ruka at the vacation home Keijo and Lea as part of the annual get together of three families from Finland, Germany and the United States. This was the year meeting up in Finland. Ruka is about 25 km from the Arctic Circle and 18 km from this confluence point.

The day of the hunt was the end of our stay in Ruka returning to the main home of Keijo and Lea about five hundred kilometers south. The first stop was Kuusmo where the three ladies went shopping which gave the three guys a chance to go for this confluence point about 12 km away.

Turns out this was an easy confluence point to reach. We found an unpaved road off the main road heading toward this point about 2 km north of the town of Kussmo. This road winded 10 km and ended at a lake. Amazingly, the confluence was about 45 meters away from the end of the road.

After the hunt, which took about 40 minutes, we caught up with the shopping party at very interesting roadside attraction at Suomusslmi – an impressive outdoor displace of hundreds of scare crow like characters known as the “Silent People” by Reijo Kela.

Easy and pleasant hunting trip and now Keijo is no longer pointless.

Rating of this hunt:

Degree of Challenge: 1 – Able to drive within 45 meters of the Confluence point. (1= very easy - drive to the point; to 5= a death march – glad it is over)

Scenery: 3– Classic northern Finland scenery – pin forest and near a lake (Scale: 1= not interesting at all; 5= take your breath away)

Culture-social factors: 3– Fun to do the hunt with a real Finn and appreciate what northern Finland is like (Scale: 1=dull; 5= most stimulating)
