08-Jul-2014 – During this year vacation my wife Elena Ageeva, father-in-law Nikolay Ageev, my nephew Andrey Govenco and me planned to explore the north zone of Russia: Karelia, a brave state with a lot of history, religion and traditions, where overflows the magnificent of the architecture since the 12th till the 16th century, with numerous monasteries that survived after the Leninist and Stalinist persecutions from the last century. After 24 hrs by train from Moscow, we got to Kem, the town near the White Sea, just 170 km from the Arctic Circle. On our way we passed St. Petersburg and Petrozavodsk cities, crossed hundreds of kilometers of virgin forests full of firs and pines where bears, deer and herd of wolves still abound.

In the little harbor of Rabocheostrovsk settlement, my father-in-law Nikolay negotiated with some local fishermen, brothers Anatoly and Alexander, to convey us to the 65°N 35E° by their motor boat. Even being around 20:00, in this time of the year we have an advantage of “the white night”, because the sun sets after 1:30 am and rises at 2:30 am, and for some weeks the dark of the night doesn't really show up. In this time the tide has the lowest level, because of that we had to push the little aluminum boat for about 150 m onto the mud till we reached the water front.

As we got to the water, the navigation was very slow because the engine power was very low, about 5Hp. We sailed between the small islands, some of them with seals resting on the shore after a long fishing day. The confluence point is located 10 km away from the coast, At the East direction you can see the beautiful Solovetskiy Island, known for its wonderful monasteries and the stoned labyrinths, unknown formations still present on different islands.

The little engine of the boat turned off three times: it is easy to imagine our anxiety, even though I could see the calm of the fishermen and at the same time I felt better, knew they had everything under control. Every once in a while they had to change the engine´s spark plug, which slowed the speed of the boat. During the trip we heard the fishermen' stories about their experiences and exploits: hunting seals and white whales in a group of brave fishermen and vessels not always appropriate for it, about picking up delicious cloudberry that only grows in the wetland on the islands of this latitude, funny winter adventures that took place here on frozen surface of White Sea.

It took over an hour to get to the confluence zone, the sun was still up shinning in the sky, we had a quick demarcation of the confluence 65°N 35E°, took some pictures of the uniform panorama and our “hunters” photo too. It took us over an hour to get back to the land, again with the navigation interrupted by the routine cleanings of the engine´s spark plug, watching and enjoying the absolutely beautiful and amazing breathtaking views, totally different from our tropical views at homeland. Finally we landed very early in the morning, by 1:00 am at July, 9, when one could see the last sunbeams visible over the horizon.

I classify this confluence with a grade of 6 out of 10, because of the distance and very complicated logistics which was due to my father in law Nikolay. I dedicate this exploit to my nephew Andrey Govenko, who had accompanied us with enthusiasm today on his 12-th birthday to this amazing trip to the White Sea.
