English narrative

02-Oct-2005 -- We intended to visit a degree confluence point long before, but points near Saint-Petersburg were rapidly discovered by others. Thus, it was decided to hurry. The plan was to make a trip on Sunday, October 2, 2005 regardless of any conditions. The chosen point N61 E33 lay only 15 mi (25 km) away from a village where one of the participants (Alena) spent several weekends this summer. She knew the road to those places quiet well. All three of us (Alena Antipova, Misha Koroteev, and Anton Patiev) met together and started our journey from Saint-Petersburg at 9:55 AM. We drove by Murmansk highway (M-18).

We were lucky: the weather was fine. Autumn forests around the highway and clouds in the bright blue sky amazed us by their beauty. The morning freshness braced us up keeping us awake. The way of 170 mi (270 km) to the town of Olonets was run in 4.5 hours.

In Olonets we eased down searching a back road that leaded to the West from the highway. The goal point itself was located somewhere in fields (according to Google Maps). We wanted to drive as much closer to the point as possible. The minimum distance from the highway to the point was 0.75 mi (1.2 km). We succeeded to approach 0.55 mi (0.9 km) to the point. It was strictly to the South from us.

Each of us has a Magellan GPS receiver: a new eXplorist 500 and older Meridian Gold and Meridian Platinum. We set up the goal for them and started crossing the field. We felt a real thrill of the hunters considering the fact that this was our first point!

Our advancement to the South was made more difficult by ditches that crossed the field. Fortunately, they were not wide and not filled with water. The field itself was abandoned: only a small strip kept some traces of potatoes, while others were overrun with grass, nettles, ox-eye daisies and other natural growth. The ground was damp and soon our feet got wet. After 18 minutes we came very close to the point. A single tree served us as a reference point (you can see it on the panorama), but the aim appeared to be a little bit closer.

An open place and a lot of satellites allowed us to catch all zeroes on GPS screens quickly enough. The accuracy was good, too. The “quarry” was caught, and we felt ourselves absolutely happy.

A photo session took more time since the sun was shining very brightly. It was hard to avoid light spots on receiver’s screens. At last, we made 2 circular panoramic shots and moved back. We found that we missed a crossroad not far away where another road runs to the South. It was possible to get closer to the point (0.3 mi, 0.5 km) and walk along the field without jumping over ditches.

We appreciate Degree Confluence Project for the interesting trip. Next points are waiting for us!
