12-Mar-2009 -- We left Goose Bay at 8:30 am, March 12, with the temperature at -3C, snowing and a little windy. We had been planning this confluence hunt for a few months, ever since I noticed that the confluence site was about 0.6 miles from a portion of the Trans-Labrador Trail on the way to coastal Labrador from central Labrador.

We traveled for about 4.5 hours to get near the site, then headed out through the black spruce forest common throughout Labrador on our Arctic Cat Bearcats, pushing through some really deep snow that a recent storm had dumped in our area (~62cm). We managed to get within 100 m by snowmobile, and after having a lunch, we strapped on the snowshoes and headed for ground zero.

We wandered around in the trees trying to find the exact spot, and after about 20 - 30 minutes slogging through the deep snow, we arrived on the site. The GPS was showing about 15ft (4m) accuracy, and it was about 1:30 pm. We both took out our cameras to get pictures, only to realize that the cold had zapped both camera's batteries and they kept shutting off while we swapped batteries in and out of our pockets/hands to warm them up long enough to get the pics!!

Eventually we got the job done, and headed back to the machines and the main trail. As luck would have it, we actually had the trail groomer pass by just as we hit the main trail!! We had a great ride for about 30 minutes or so, but the wind had come up a lot and the temperature had dropped to about -18C actual with a windchill of near -30C, and the trail was drifting in fast in open areas. However, we arrived safe and sound back in Goose Bay around 6:15 pm, a little cold and sore, but delighted to have managed this confluence visit! Many thanks to my friend Glenn for coming along with me... without his company I could not/would not have done this trip!!
