26-Aug-2025 -- On my train ride from Vienna to Ludwigshafen am Rhein, where I'm working every year for the festival of German film, I was reading "Love Triangle" by Matt Parker. He mentions confluence.org and I was immediately hooked, looking up the closest confluence point to Ludwigshafen and born was to idea to make an excursion.
So I decided to visit Wissembourg, stay there overnight and make a short trip to the nearby secondary confluence point by bicycle. German local trains were supportive in taking me and my bicycle directly into Wissembourg.
From there the point is remarkably easy to reach by wonderful bike lanes and only a 20min ride from town.
It seems as if the confluence was intentionally placed inside the forest just 10m away from a crossing of bicycle lanes, service roads and a beautiful map board showing all the bike routes along the Lauter Valley.
After locating the confluence with the help of google maps, just entering "49n 8e", I just took a few steps left, right, forward, beackward and then settled down to have a french baguette and a delicious brie that I bought in a local organic grocery store. As it seems not many people visit this spot. Mission accomplished. On the way back to Wissembourg I saw some magic yellow tree mushrooms, a pheasant recreation area and a huge hippodrome. Wissembourg is an extraordinary medieval town with a huge church, massive fortification walls, picturesque half-timbered houses, a sweet little river (Lauter) with many bridges and vinyards on the slopes of the neighboring hills. I can highly recommend to take a trip there.
