19-Jul-2005 -- After the successful visit of the confluence point 37N 38E on the Euphrates I hit the road to 37N 40E. The Europe road is in very bad condition here. Because of the incredible heat and all the oil tankers that are going to and fro on the route to Iraq, the tarmac has become really bumpy, so the bottom of my car kept touching the road. In Viranşehir I turned into the road to Ceylanpınar, the border town to Syria. I was expecting a point in the desert, but the ground is being irrigated here strongly. So I had to turn round a few times, because there were impassable irrigation canals between the fields.

The point was situated on a harvested field in the plain. From a field track it were only about 200 metres that I had to cover on foot. After I had taken the photos, I drove on to Mardin where I was looking for accommodation. Mardin is a town on top of a hill worth seeing. Unfortunately, the citadel on the top can't be visited, because it is being used as a NATO base. With numerous transmitters the radio communication in nearby Syria is being monitored.
