#1: View to North

(visited by Captain Peter and Leon Leprozo)

20-Feb-2005 -- The visibility is intermittently bad during rainshowers, but otherwise very good. So we could visit another Sicilian confluence, 37N/13E.

This confluence is quite far offshore, but due to the high mountains on Sicily we can see something. To the Northeast we see the mountain ranges of Sicily, and towards North there are the rocky cliffs of Capo (Cape) San Marco and the small town of Sciacca (pronounce: “Shucka”).

Sciacca has a small harbor for fishing vessels and yachts. The town stands on a steep slope of a hill which rises sharply from the sea. It is of quite modern appearance and surounded by an irregular wall. Its population is about 45,000.

Mathematically also the island of Pantelleria could comfortably be visible from this confluence, but today there were always rainclouds in WSW-ly direction, and small islands of volcanic origin are anyway very liable to be wrapped in clouds.
