English Narrative

18-Jun-2025 --

I'm at 30°N, 103°E,the end of an adventure… uh, well, actually, it only took me a 20-minute walk from my home to get here, seems even easier than writing this narrative.

One's own destiny is truly unpredictable. I, as a lifelong resident of Yucheng District, Ya'an City, not even heard of this website a day ago. How did I end up writing a report now? It's well known among the locals that Ya'an sits on the “mysterious” 30th parallel north (in fact, a “30°N Park” lies just 2.2 km to the east of this confluence point). As one with a hobby for outdoor exploration who frequently uses digital maps, I'd long noticed that the 103rd meridian east cuts straight through the center of Ya'an's old city—their intersection lies north of the urban core. But it wasn't until yesterday, when I read another netizen' s travelogue about arriving 30°N, 120°E, that I realized people actually pursue such fascinating projects: setting confluence points as adventure targets; sampling and observing the Earth' s surface, and documenting reports to pass down through generations; sharing stories so future visitors might feel the weight of time's passage. Since one of such points is right on my doorstep, recording its current state is a small but unshirkable task for me.

Surprisingly, I appear to be the first visitor here – faster than anyone else! As a local, I quickly guessed why: the last reported try was from a score ago, back when this area was still factories—over a decade away from relocation. Today, the Jian'an Factory and Chuanxi Factory that once stood here have been demolished. Their grounds are now carved up by new roads, expanded primary schools, developing residential complexes, and public facilities, or turned into vegetable gardens by nearby residents. Only a gap in the green belt hints that the factory gate—photographed by the previous visitor and well remembered in my mind—was there.Reaching the confluence point is easy now: start from the National Highway (Kangzang Road), where past visitors once stopped, a brand-new, unusually broad street called Jianxi Road (named in commemoration of these two factories) now cuts through the old factory site, leading towards the foot of the mountains. The only effort need doing is turning northeast from the crossing onto Jianxi Road, and following it until the next junction. On Google Earth, the 30°N, 103°E CP should be right at the western entrance of this intersection. But in person, I had to walk several more meters northeast, stepping onto the northern Curb of the intersection, then the GPS coordinates on my phone finally flickered around 30°N and 103°E.

Here I am. Overnight rain has left water stains on the ground; a cool breeze makes the clouds appear in varying shades of density—classic Ya'an weather, “the City of Rain.” Across the street to the east is a newly built residential complex and a police station. To the south, there's also a construction site, theoretically for new apartments too—but currently idle. Behind the barriers lies only a large pit. To the west, the western entrance of the intersection is now the gate of a real estate construction site, but according to urban plans, a municipal road will eventually extend from here, connecting to Ruyi Street further west. North of the road, beyond a fence, lies a parking lot; further off stands a community health center, and an empty lot where the old factory once stood, now used by locals as a vegetable garden.

The industrial complexes once photographed by earlier visitors have all vanished, save for trivial relics: turn south from the crossing at Kangzang Road, onto Guoyuan Road, walk a short distance, you'll spot murals on the wall, depicting the factories once stood here, and an information board summarizing their history. Perhaps few passersby notice this board; future residents will gradually forget this land's past… But I suspect it's different for you, my readers, participants of the Degree Confluence Project.“Conditions may go with the changes of time, but people's emotions shall stay the same.” “We are like birds, soaring through the horizons of time, lingering between brushes of memory…” Whether you come here a decade or a century from now, I do believe that you'll compare what you see with this narrative—which by then might be a page in the ancient books. “Just look all around here, I know this is where I belong…I just feel compelied to share it with you.”

In our time, the most convenient way to reach Ya'an is by train from Chengdu, taking about an hour. From Ya'an Railway Station to the confluence point, it takes about half an hour by bicycle or bus. Alternatively, one can take a long-distance bus to Ya'an and disembark at Ximen Bus Station, which is closer to the confluence point. While you're here, don't miss the Ya Fish from Zhougong River, tea from Mengding Mountain, or a visit to adorable giant pandas… May your discoveries in your own time be beyond what I've ever known.
