#1: confluence site looking south

(visited by Frank Majcenovic)

04-May-2002 -- I decided to attempt this confluence on a cold and snowy May day. It looked like a short distance from the highway. It is steep and snow covered. Mid-June would probably be an ideal time to visit this site.

From Kaslo: Take hwy 31A west to the Buchanan Lookout Road on your right at 9.3 km. Follow this road uphill to the K & S Wagon Road sign at 10.5 km. Go left onto the K & S Wagon Road. Turn right and uphill at 12.3 km, then stop at road marked 'Road Deactivated' on your right at 16.2 km. I parked here. The GPS showed 1500 meters to the confluence.

I walked from here up the road and then followed the Ten Mile creek up to the end of a cut block. This was all 2-3 feet deep snow. But most was hardpacked enough that I would only occasionally get the 'knee-twister'. (The Backroads mapbook shows a road approaching this confluence from the north and uphill of the site. This may be a better approach when the snow melts.)

Past the end of the cut block, the bushwacking actually turned out to be easier as the snow was very hardpacked. There are some steep sections. Weather was cloudy and snowing so I don't know how the views would be.

Anyway. I got to the confluence about 1 hour from leaving my truck. The confluence is in the trees. Always the trees! As Mr. Buchanan (first owner of the log mill in Kaslo) once said, "Wood surrounds us from the cradle to the grave." So true, so true...
