#1: The confluence

(visited by Stéphane Bertrand)

26-May-2001 -- That weekend, I was determined on visiting a confluence, but I was alone. I selected a point where I did not have to venture into the woods. I chose « Lac Légaré » in the north of St-Michel-des-Saints. People say that beyond this place, there is nothing and the mosquitoes make half-turn. It is also said that the latter are five times larger than everywhere. Personally, I can tell you that the last assertion is true.

The way was a little longer than envisaged. Four hours of road to only get there including two hours for the last 40km. It was a small road of gravels or rather of rocks at certain places. It is very easy to get lost in that place.

I had to hold my breath in some occasions. I crossed a flooded road and some rather alarming bridges. I drove with only one hand to hold my GPS close to the windshield because the road was too rough. I put it down only once and guess what? I was driving too quickly right before a bump, not time to slow down sufficiently, and oops the GPS raised one foot in the air and fell down. Then nothing, all was finished. The GPS was dead. I was lost forever. I took stock of my life quickly then my heart stopped. At the moment when I started to see the small light at the end of the tunnel, I realized that the GPS was going back to life. Oof!, I did not lose the track. At that time, I started again to make new plans of career. After all, my life could not end this way!

Finally, I arrived at 200 meters of the confluence by the road. I went down 135 meters in woods towards the Lake Légaré. Then, I could not go further. I was on the border of the Lake, 65 meters from the confluence. As per my estimate, the point was in the lake close to the shore, opposite from where I was standing. I tempted to go on the other side by taking a small path. With my great surprise, there were a country cottage and occupants. In fact, they were more surprised than I to see somebody at this place. They were very interested by the project and someone came with me to the point by the other side. Unfortunately, a rather broad brook prevented us to reach the point.

Being satisfied with my reading of 65 meters and emotions that I experienced, I decided to turn back. The confluences being increasingly far from my residence, I decided not to go there alone and I even think of buying a second GPS.
