#2: My GPS receiver (and coral). This is about as close as you can get to the confluence on land. #3: A view from the summit of Fitzroy Island. The confluence is in the ocean, about 9 km away.

(visited by Ross Finlayson)

18-Aug-2005 -- The closest piece of land to this ocean confluence is the south-eastern tip of Fitzroy Island National Park, in the Great Barrier Reef, near Cairns. From Cairns, Fitzroy Island can be reached by ferry. A hiking trail takes you to the (aptly named) Nudey Beach, and from there you can continue to hike (with some difficulty) along the rocky shoreline (and coral reef) to the closest point to the confluence - about 6.6 km away (see photo #1). Photo #2 shows my GPS at this point.

Another hiking trail takes you to the summit of Fitzroy Island. Photo #3 looks towards the confluence point - in the ocean, about 8km away.

It is possible to hire a kayak at the Fitzroy Island resort. However, for a 13+ km round-trip ocean voyage to the confluence point, I suggest using a more substantial vessel.
