English narrative

07-Jan-2005 -- This is the second part of the narrative about our trip to the confluences 57N55E and 57N54E.

1:22 PM: After the successful visit to the confluence 57N55E we are again on the Kukushtan - Chaykovskiy highway. We decided do not call in at the large village Yelovo on the Kama River, but head straight to Chaykovskiy. The road runs through coniferous forests, picturesquely enveloped by snow (Pic. 7).

3:00 PM: Arrival at the city Chaykovskiy. This is a young city in the south of the Perm area, which was founded simultaneously with the construction of the hydroelectric power station on the Kama River. It is named after the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who was born and lived for eight years in the neighboring city Votkinsk, in the vicinity of which our confluence is located. Nowadays there is a museum in the former Tschaikovsky estate. At first we planned to visit it, but it has become evident that we don’t have enough time.

3:20 PM: We crossed the Kama River by the hydroelectric dam (Pic. 8). While trying to stop and take photos, we drove into a snowdrift. It was a lot of work to get the car out from there (Pic. 9).

3:35 PM: We are again on wheels, entering into the Udmurtia Republic on the highway Chaykovskiy - Votkinsk. According to our not-very-detailed map, the confluence is on the right side of highway, in the valley of the river Siva.

4:00 PM: The arrow on the GPS has already deviated more than 90 degrees from our direction of motion, and the distance, which had diminished to two and a half kilometers, begun to rise again. It is time to try something. We decided to return to the right turn, which we had already passed, towards the Vogulka village. As became clear later, had we driven one kilometer farther, we would have reached the new by-pass highway, not shown on our map, which goes in the right direction. Knowing nothing about this by-pass highway, we made our way on the dirt road to Vogulka village and further on, but nevertheless we got to this new highway after all. The distance to the confluence rapidly diminished to one kilometer; however, here the highway turned towards Votkinsk again. Searching for a convenient place to park, we drove ahead another 600 meters.

4:16 PM: We parked the car and left on foot across the snowy field. The snow is knee-deep in places. The confluence is 1480 meters away. It took about an hour to beat our way to it.

4:56 PM: The confluence! It was getting dark already and we spent a lot of time taking all the necessary pictures.

5:22 PM: We headed back by the shortest way across the field to the bend in the highway.

5:47 PM: We reached the highway and walked to our car. In the car we had a snack, celebrating the first successful confluence visit in the Udmurtia Republic.

6:06 PM: It is entirely dark. Not stopping at Votkinsk, we drove straight to Perm. Our way home runs along the right side of the Kama River via the settlements Kel'chino, Sivinskoye, Bolshaya Sosnova, Ocher, and Krasnokamsk.

11:20 PM: I am back home.

The entire trip, both confluences, took us 15 hours, during which we have gone more than 600 kilometers.
