Estava conquistada a confluência.

Voltamos ao bar do Sr. Peixoto. Nunca uma coca gelada desceu tão bem!

Recuperado o ânimo, continuamos a viagem: fomos comemorar em Parnaíba.

27-Dec-2004 -- In February 2004, I was introduced to Degree Confluence Project by my friend Henrique César. He did the confluence of Nova América (GO/Brazil) at that time.

I decided, as a future activity, to join this project. Although, I wanted to do some confluence that has not been visited before.

I have got a chance to do it in December, 2004, as my girlfriend, Márcia Negreiros, and I were going to travel to Piauí for vacation. During our trip preparation I realized that Piauí had a lot of non-officially visited confluences. So, It was going to be a great opportunity to combine my vacation plans with some adventure. I have picked up two of them to do it.

I have shown the DCP web site to my twin brothers, Márcio and Marcelo Andrade; who, of course, loved the idea of visiting the two points close to our father´s house, in Teresina city (Piaui).

Our vacation route included a trip to Parnaíba and Luis Correa (beaches cities in the state). We have planned to spend the New Year’s Eve at there. By a coincidence, the confluence 5ºS 42°W was marked right in our path. Therefore, let’s go for it!

We left Teresina in December 27, 2004, at 7:30am. We followed the road BR-343 to the city of Campo Maior.

After passing by the city we met an intersection (which should take us to the city of Castelo do Piauí.) which we have turned right. Following this road (PI-115) we were about 27 km away from the confluence point according to the GPS.

Around 9am we saw a bar (Bar do Peixoto) close to the road and to the confluence. We have stopped the car to talk with its owner, Mr. Peixoto, to ask his permission to go into his farm to do the confluence. We showed him the GPS and the digital camera to support our explanation. We mentioned the two invisible lines that cross each other and etc. although we still think he understood nothing about what we were saying. Anyways, he allowed us to go ahead.

We parked the car at Mr. Peixoto’s bar and walked straight into his farm. After crossing the gate (fence) we walked about 500 meters. It is not a hard task to do unless facing the sunny/warm and not windy weather. We were at 38ºC, however felling the sensation of more than 50ºC, due to the unique weather features at Piauí.

We were lucky enough to not have to walk a lot. After those 500 meters away from the gate, the GPS led us 200 meters into the forest. Obviously due to the weather conditions and to the Summer season, the grass was dry as the trees had no leaves; which made our goal easier. Finally we have achieved the confluence at 9:40 am; but, we had some other tasks to do. The first one was to get all zeros in GPS. The second one and more difficult was having to take the picture of it; because the camera focus was not helpfull. After following all the procedures demanded, we headed back to Mr. Peixoto’s bar to rest and celebrate when some coconut water and coke were very well accepted. We took one more picture with Mr. Peixoto before getting back to our initial route.

While driving to Parnaíba we talked a lot about the experience feeling proud of ourselves.
