#1: NORTH OF 22S 47W

(visited by Ricardo Gloria, Ana Carla, Marcos Urso and Alessandro Pintaudi)

12-Oct-2004 -- We came from Limeira in this raining day, to go to Aguai to try to find the Confluence 22S47W. We had read the history of other group that tried to reach the point and didn't have success.

Based on that, we tried the approach by the north of Aguai city, trying to find unpaved farm roads that could take us as near as possible, and then we could reach the point by feet. When the city finished, in the North direction, neighborhood called Siriri, we find an orange plantation with one road in the right side and the other in the left side.

We tried the right side one at first, but finished around 2 kilometers far from the Confluence, with a dense forest and a creek between us. It was possible to guess that the confluence was someplace in the hill just in front of us or just after it. Asking to a farmer in the unique very small an poor farm house close to this point, he told us to came back to the initial point and take the other road.

We came back and took the left road at this time, heading straight to the Confluence point. We pass throught a farm gate and just 1 km after we stopped to ask authorization to a farm employee to go ahead, but we didn't get it. At this point we were just 2.5 km from the point, but due to the heavy rain, it was not possible to the farmers see the direction we took after asking permission.

We were just able to continue with the car for about 1 km. Due to the rain, all the roads were very slippery and the probability to get the car locked in the middle of the plantations in the mud was high. All this area is planted with sugar cane and, by the GPS indication, we tried to reach the point by the right side of a forest patch. We walked about 1 km uphill, but the indication was pointed more and more inside of the forest (in our left). It was not possible to pass through it due to the great quantity of thorns. So, we walked back and tried to contour the forest in the opposite direction (with it in our right).

After 1mud Km, we found the point in the middle of sugar cane plantation. GPS error was about 3 m.

Back to the car, the problem was to turn it in the opposite direction due to the mud and go back to the city to have lunch.

This was our 1st. confluence, and we liked the adventure. In our region there is just another 1 listed as incomplete, and maybe we'll try to reach it.

Coordinator's Note: This visit is incomplete because it does not meet our Photo Requirements.
