English version

06-Oct-2004 -- Since I discovered this site two years ago, I have been wanting to go to a Confluence. I also wanted to try a Confluence that hadn't been visited before, so that ruled out everything in the US (we live in Ohio). That left our annual visit to Turkey to visit my wife's family.

This year on a vacation to northern Turkey, we came dangerously close to 41N 30E, even traveling on the same road. We were also close to 41N 31E and 41N 32E, but didn't stop at any of them.

When we got back to Ankara, my wife, Ufuk, felt sorry enough for me that she convinced my father-in-law, Behçet, to take me to this Confluence later in the week. She also decided that it would be more fun shopping with her sister than to trek through farm land with us. So that left me and my father-in-law spending an afternoon with a common vocabulary of about 50 useful words.

So, on Wednesday, we set off on our adventure. Being able to read and see a previous visit to the site made finding it much easier. We came in a roundabout way to the Confluence from the North. While the map showed a paved road, it didn't indicate that it was probably paved during the Ottoman empire - years of tractors had worn away at the pavement.

We pulled off onto the same dirt road as Akoğlu, and within a 100 m could see the big rock. This made navigating to the point quite easy, and we didn't run across any farmers. My GPS brought us to a point about 20 m west and a little lower at 1133 m, just north of the rock in Akoğlu's photo.

After taking a bunch of pictures (there are more of them on my site, we hiked back to the car and headed off for a coffee at a just opened, exotic coffee shop called Starbucks. My father-in-law is now hooked on visiting Confluences, too.
