02-Sep-2004 -- We were in the general are of this confluence while carrying out field work to estimate grizzly bear density in west central British Columbia.

That work involved helicoptering to a grid of over 60 sites covering about 10,000 square kilometers. At each grid point we set out a single strand of barbed wire around a very very stinky bear attractant (rotten cow blood and rotten fish).

When the bears come they leave a few hairs on the wire. We collect the hair, extract DNA from the hair follicle, which allows us to identify individual bears, and over the course of many such "captures" and "recaptures", can estimate grizzly bear density.

One flight took us near the 57N x 131W confluence so we decided to take the requisite photographs and enjoy the experince.

Coordinator's Note: As explained on our Information about visiting Degree Confluences page and in our FAQ aerial visits are considered to be incomplete.

Having said that, this is a great example of an aerial visit that provides visual information that may help anyone who wants to attempt a land-based visit to the confluence.
