English narrative

31-Jul-2004 -- During the period from July 30 until August 18, I realized, at last, to the full my long-nurtured project of an automobile race from Asia to Europe, having gone by automobile from Novosibirsk on the Black Sea coast of Caucasus on the route: Novosibirsk – Omsk – Kurgan – Chelyabinsk – Ufa – Kazan – Cheboksary – Nizhni Novgorod – Vladimir – Moscow – Voronezh – Rostov-na-Donu – Timashevsk – Taman – Anapa – Novorossisk – Gelendzhik – Tuapse – Krymsk – Moscow. I left Novosibirsk by automobile on July 30 and in the evening on August 1 I arrived in Moscow, having visited on the road 7 points, 3 of which have remained uncompleted in view of the shortage of time.

I visited the point 55N058E in the evening on July 31. The road through the Urals has taken more time than I planned. From Kurgan where I spent the night last night, I had overcome already about 600 km, and I should be in time still to reach this day Kazan, where I planned to stop for a lodging for the night. Running forward, I shall tell, that it was possible to reach only Naberezhnye Chelny, since the road from the border of Tatarstan up to Naberezhnye Chelny has been closed for repairs, and at midnight I had to zigzag on completely broken field roads, going round this site according to recommendations of traffic signs. But that's another story.

The point appeared to be quite near to the asphalt road – only 800 meters. In the same place, but in a perpendicular direction, there passes the railway along which in the direction of the point goes a field road. However the recent rain has made it completely unsuitable for use, which I, not having believed it at first, there and then even made sure – having buried all four wheels in slippery mud, not having had time to drive off even 50 meters from the asphalt. In some ways it is good, since, in the final analysis, precisely from there even came help, when I became convinced also that it was unlikely to turn out that I could leave independently, even if I shall carry put under the wheels all the gravel which I shall manage to dig up from the ground on the shoulder of the road. When the GAZELLE has not handled the attempts to pull out my car from the mud, to take its place came the KAMAZ, which became my savior.

After all of this I decided not to risk any more and have gone on foot.
