#1: View north from the confluence

(visited by Clarence Pelley)

22-Aug-2004 -- I was touring the Conception Bay North area with my daughter Kena and her husband Greg when I remembered that there was a confluence near Lower Island Cove.

We had camped out in Freshwater, Carbonear and had just visited Salmon Cove Beach, Northern Bay and viewed the hole through the cliff at Burnt Point. Proceeding on to Lower Island Cove, I turned on the GPS. A gravel road, called Station Road, branched off the highway to the north, and appeared to be heading to the confluence.

We followed Station Road to what may have been the remains of the foundation of a former railway station. The Newfoundland Railway had a branch line as far as Western Bay, but I did not know it had come to Lower Island Cove. Need to do more research on that one! We parked the van and continued about 700 meters on foot by way of a forest footpath to a section of land bordered by a double-strand barbed-wire fence. Inside the enclosure the GPS zeroed out on the confluence.
