English narrative

24-Jul-2004 -- During this vacation an idea occurred to me to finally deal with the 56th parallel within the limits of the Kemerovo area of Russia. Judging by the map, all СР's in this area are favourably situated along the Siberian highway connecting Moscow with Magadan, and having the longest extent in the world (about 9 thousand km) within the limits of one country. On July 24 I managed to visit 3 points (56N089E, 56N 88E, 56N 87E), though in truth it is only possible to call one of them successful (56N088E).

I left Novosibirsk in the evening on Friday the 23rd of July, and after 190 km I spent the night in the city of Jurga in unique hotel which goes by the original Siberian name "Sibir". In itself the fact of spending the night in a hotel before a forthcoming long journey (instead of, let us assume, in the vehicle or in a tent) already was a favorable event, therefore such a trifle as the absence of hot water (in the entire city up to the 28th of the month) and even a water heater in the "deluxe" room (for 700 roubles per day) could not spoil the mood, and after I was turned down in the buffet (even though closed, but with signs of life behind the door), but mercifully they allocated an electric teakettle and pot, and I generally felt, that life began to settle down.

On the next day I rose earlier and continued traveling east. My purpose was to reach the settlement Itat, located near the point 55N 089E, as quickly as possible, and from there already to move toward home, consistently visiting unvisited points.

I reached as far as Itat by dinner. There was remarkably hot weather. The point is located within 5 kilometers of the highway and, having verified with the map and having connected the forward bridge, I have confidently moved down the necessary field road…

According to the plan (and according to the map) the field road, having made a loop of a length of about 10 kilometers, again should exit on the highway, on the way bringing the hunter as close as possible to the required destination (that is, to the point). But it did not go there. Having begun as a confident tractor track, winding and periodically disappearing in marshy bogs, filled with slippery mud, passing on questionable earthen levees, dividing small ponds (which were themselves formed from almost imperceptible streamlets) and swamps, into which these streamlets run after the dam, the road suddenly has disappeared completely, after about four kilometers, dissolving in dense undergrowth of burdock and spreading coltsfoot. Having made some attempts to come nearer to the point from different directions directly, without the road, and having reduced the distance to the point to 2.5 km, I again left on the highway, to come back on the other side.

And here there was a downpour. The strongest. With hailstones and all possible attributes such as thunder and lightning. Having suddenly begun, the rain ended fairly quickly. Despite that, since it transformed the rest of the road, it deprived me at once of hope to reach this point today. Therefore I did not even begin to make any more attempts, and hastened after the next points.

P.S. One day I received a letter from the glorified confluence hunter from Great Britain, David Coombs (see), who lingered too much in Mongolia. He is going to risk passing in the winter through these parts (though it can be not so terrible after Mongolia?), and asked me to leave him any points along the highway for visiting. Well, what about it, David, here, perhaps, is one of them! Only do not overlook to take in the winter with yourself skis (or, at least, a snowmobile). (It is, of course, a joke!).

Success to all!
