(visited by Sarel Wagner and Helen Waters)

20-Jul-2004 -- We visited this Confluence during our first visit to Mozambique. We took some pictures as well. The point is 68.6 meters above sea level as recorded by the GPS after doing an average of the point. The reported error was 4 meters.

This being the first Confluence point that we have done, we were unsure of what to expect. We are not speaking Portuguese, so talking to the locals was not easy. We were worried about landmines and over-protective people as we are unable to explain what we were doing on their land. We wasted some time with a shopkeeper trying to find out if indeed it was safe to wander off into what we could see was dense bush. Some of the locals were quite drunk and it made for some entertainment as they were trying to explain things to us, a state of chaos.

Eventually we surmised that there were no landmines and walked off into the bush. Helen got a real fright when some birds were disturbed by our walking in the bush and flew away, startling her. We crossed some footpaths but none were leading in the direction of the point. As we later discovered on our way back, there was one less than 100 meters away leading close to 24S 35E. The next thing we discovered was quite a shock. We thought there was a nice grass covered stretch in front of us and proceeded into a marshy swamp!

The water was more than a foot deep in places with lots of mud. It was a good 2 km trek to get to the point and it took us the best part of 3 hours to get there and back. On our way back someone had started a fire in the swamp and we had to walk around that.
