#1: West view Island Karlsoy / Westliche Sicht

(visited by Hermann Grebner)

24-Jul-2004 -- (German narrative)

To reach this crossing-point was particularly interesting for me. From 70 N – 19 E just around the corner – so to speak. ( 38.2 km as the crow flies ) and again another round 10 degree longitude and latitude point, this one exactly 1111 km north 60 N – 20 E which I visited previously on the same trip.

The drive goes along road number 863 eastern to HANSNES. From here there are several different ferrys going to the surrounding islands. The ferry I was taking left at 9 am and brought me to the island KARLSØY where the crossing point is nearby. After an one hour trip I drove ashore the only vehicle this day onto the island. It seems that this island is used by inhabitants of TROMSØ for hiking on weekends.

I then drove east on a small village road for approximatley 500 meters, then at walking speed on a little track for another 500 meters. This was it!

From here on I went on foot to the shore. It was about 200 meters, the first 50 of them steeply downhill. Not to be driven by car! Now, once again, I was putting up my catamaran, which took about 1 hour again. A few hikers passed by and they were astonished about my unusual plans. Starting position was N 69° 59.780 / E 019° 56.262.

Therefore there were about 400 meters going north and about 2.4km going east left to conquer. I started at 11.10 am. At first in the slipstream of the island to the east where a little lighthouse can be seen. From there another 1.5 km east, leading away from the island, with by now clearly more wind and stronger current. This is why I didn't manage to get all zeroes on my GPS ( see picture # 5 ). At 11:30 I had reached the confluence. There was a lot of bouncing while I was taking the pictures. You could get seasick there.

Going back, I had a slight tail wind.

The ferry going back to HANSNES wasn´t leaving until 16:15 so I had enough time to explore some of the island. A little by boat, a little on foot. When I was back at the pier of the ferry, waiting for it, a saturday night party starting at a small coffee-shop nearby.

After getting back to HANSNES at 17:00 I hurriedly drove the 60 km back to TROMSØ, trying to catch the boat to HAMMERFEST. But I was 20 minutes too late. I could see the Hurtigruten-ship leaving the harbour. So I drove back to HAMMERFEST the next day in my car.
