Então... surpresa, a água acabou!

We are a group of students a Teacher of PHYSICS at CEFETRN (Technical College) and we left Natal at 8:00 AM heading to Barcelona around 100Km west.

We noticed before that the confluence was about 3Km from the road between Barcelona and São Tomé, what would make our trip easier. The road, despite being paved had many holes (and even a broken bridge) caused by strong unusual rains last January. We were monitored our way using GPS, until we reached 36ºW longitude. At this point we stopped the car and the GPS indication for the confluence was 2,7km south. We marked the departure point and got into the bush.

Strong plants and cactus mainly form local vegetation, called CAATINGA. This vegetation is usually dry but after the fist rains it becomes green and heavy. Right after the first meters out of the road we had to open our way between the plants. Few meters ahead we met a barber wired fence and again another fence made by a toxic plant called AVELÓS that can be dangerous especially in contact with the eyes.

We found no alternative besides crossing those fences, as there was no house or track around that could indicate a landowner to who we should ask permission to get into the land.

After 90 minutes of a tiring walk we arrived at the point, ready to celebrate with a big drink of fresh water. Then... surprise! The water was over. What kind of plan was that? So we rested a few minutes at the confluence, took the pictures and got on the track again.

In our way back we decide to try a surviving technique, what consists in eating cactus, a natural water reservoir. Depending on how thirsty you are it worth. We also met two boys (around 14 years old) with a homemade gun trying to hunt the next meal. They decided to hitchhike our GPS to get home easier. It was an interesting experience for us all. We made the first successful visit to a land confluence in our state and plan to make the second visit in the near future.
