28-Apr-2004 -- My brother Chris and I were planning on visiting Jamaica for a week in April. We wanted an adventure during our trip and I knew about the Digital Confluence Project. I did some research and saw that there had been an incomplete attempt at N. 18,W.78. I figured that at the end of April we should have the weather on our side. After a look at several weather forecasting websites including projected sea states, we declared a tentative go.
The day before our visit to the confluence, we visited Black River and contacted Rick in the River Tours office and he put us in touch with Captain Garfield. Negotiations for the charter were based on fuel to keep the pontoon boat for his river tour going for a week. This seemed like a good deal all around. The economy of this small South coast town is based on agriculture from the hills and EcoTourism from the Black River.
The best part of this visit was that we did not have to explain to our guides the reason for our visit, they remembered the last attempt and were more than willing to oblige.
The island nation of Jamaica is fabulous and we purposely arrived after Spring break so that we could relax. It has been 10 years since my last visit, the island has changed and mostly for the better. It was sad to see so many global companies with so much economic influence.
A great trip made better by a successful visit.
