#1: The 22 S 50 W Confluence

(visited by Werner Rossger)

Portuguese

26-Mar-2004 -- The 22° S 50° W confluence is located in the central-western region of the state of São Paulo. Rosalia, a small village with about 1000 inhabitants is the nearest human settlement.

Climate is between tropical and subtropical, with dry winters and rainy summers. Average anual temperature is 22 degrees Celsius. The terrain is pretty flat and belongs to the Upper Cretacean Bauru series (sand soil). The whole terrain is suitable for pastures and crops such as coffee, sugar cane and oranges.

I visited the confluence following a business trip to the region. Access by car was easy. Only 2,5 km SW from Rosalia a dust road brought me to the entrance of a farm, with mango and orange orchards, belonging to Mr. Kazuo, an old Japanese immigrant. He allowed me to see the confluence but we discovered that it was located on a neighbour’s paddock, 100 m apart from his land.

After trespassing a fence, I got the spot. There is pasture all around the confluence.

Afterwards I was informed that this piece of land has only the paddock and no buildings at all. No cattle were grazing nearby. Looking eastwards we could see Mr. Kazuo’s orange plantation. The confluence is located 15 km N of Marilia, a large industrial town with 180 000 inhabitants. Marilia has two universities and mainly metal and food industries.
