Breitengrad in westlicher Richtung gefahren.

English version

02-Feb-2004 -- (Continued from 19N 49E) Due to the rearrangement of the border line between Saudi Arabia und Yemen we could not follow any longer the 49th longitude. The next confluence 18N 49E is in our days already Yemeni property. So we changed the direction to West following the 19th latitude.

The sand dunes in the Rub` al-Khāliy are aligned from Northeast to Southwest with a relatively gentle approach and a steep descend if you go southeast. Now we had to go against this direction. After 3 hours exciting drive uphill and downhill, the clutch of Andy’s Nissan started to smell and needed a break. To prepare himself for the worst case, Andy was doing some exercise in a 10 km desert run before sunset. No, that’s not true; this run was part of his training for the Riyāḍ Marathon in March 2004.

In-between two dune lines to save the clutch we could get closer to the Confluence. 30 km away from our target we parked the Nissan and continued with 3 cars. In a 90 degree angle against the dunes it took us 2 hours to reach the Confluence. Due to the intensive support from my son Nils we had the lunch break on the Confluence.

Continued at 18N 47E.
