#1: 32 km behind this farm

(visited by Hans Augdoppler)

06-Dec-2003 -- Coming from Puerto Ordaz I passed Ciudad Bolívar and crossed the Orinoco River. The CP supposed to be close to the northern bank of the Orinoco. About 16 km after the Soledad pump station I turned to the west. Soon the road became smaller and smaller and in the end there was just a sandy track [pic2.jpg]. At the end a farm [pic1.jpg] at the edge of the Orinoco swamps, but still 32 km away [8°10” N 63°45” W] and no way to continue.
Back to the main road in direction El Tigre for another 23 km to try an access route from the north. I passed the village of KARIÑA [pic3.jpg] and finally I found myself within newly erected oil fields. A lot of roads, some with a dead end, but not really helpful. Finally I gave up about 44 km NNW [8°23,45” N,64° 4,7” W] of the CP.
With a bit of frustration I changed my target – 09N65W. Later, back home I studied the GPS tracking and realized that an observed farm track should have been a way to come closer. Anyhow you need better maps or satellite images in order to have a chance for this CP. A local guide would also do it, but how to find one in this remote area.
