  37°S 61°W (visit #1) (incomplete)

#1: Bulls at the confluence, view to South

(visited by Captain Peter and Werner Furlan)

15-Oct-2003 -- Coming from Bahia Blanca on route nr. 51 we passed Coronel Pringles and continued until the intersection with route nr. 86, leading us via the small settlement of General La Madrid at about 3 p.m. From there we continued towards NNW until we turned into the road nr. 60, in fact only a dirt road between Huangelen and Olavarria, but likely to bring us quite close to 37S 61W.

We crossed an obviously abandoned railtrack, the entrance of a quite huge Estancia, the residence of a wealthy Argentine landowner, and a small river, locally known as "arroyo", and finally we arrived exactly at 61W, but about 1.2 km too far in the North. Just there we found a mark, from the Argentine "Istituto Geográfico Militar" propably referring to an older datum. It says that destroying it may lead to up to four years imprisonment! :p When walking South through Pampa grass towards the WGS84-confluence, we had to stop and turn back about 180 meters North of it, as a herd of bulls did appear, and we did not know what would happen if we dared to violate their territorial rights.

So this visit remaind an attempt only.

As usual in such an area, he views to the various directions do all resemble to each other.

We drove back the same dirt road into the picturesque Pampa dawn and finally into the sunset.

At 10 pm we were back at Azul. As already two days ago, we took again the Hotel "Dior".
