  62°N 5°E (visit #1) (secondary)

#1: View from the confluence tovards the bird mountain Einevarden

(visited by Henrik Bøhle, Gjertrud Fallet and Hein Bodahl)

21-Jun-2003 -- After the sucsessful visit to 62N 6E, and 62N 7E the day before, we continued further west heading to 62N 5E. We travelled along Nordfjord, passing Nordfjordeid, and not many other places before passing the bridge out to Vågsøy, and the community of Måløy. It is situated on one of the westernmost islands of Norway. A green island, due to heavy precipitation, as is usual in most of western Norway.

The confluence itself is situated on the northwestern part of the island, close to Einevarden, which is a bird reserve (which we found out after our visit). It is allowed to visit the reserve outside the nesting season.

We parked less than a km. from the confluence, and unlike the two previous confluenses we visited on our trip (62N 6 & 7E) the hike started downhill. And what a sight it was. A flat green valley sloping downvarde to the sea, a small creek running in the middle, and steep mountainsides on each side. From this point it is nothing but water, Torshavn on the Faroe Islands and a small trip across the southern part of Greenland before hitting Canada when heading west!

An fairly easy descent (200m) and the point was found easily. Excellent reception, with up to 12 sattelites. A lot of birds flew around, and in the air above us an Eagle was majesticly gliding through the air. Magnificent. We put a small stick in the soft ground, carving in 62N 5E in the bark to mark the confluence.

A bit more strenous to hike uphill again, but the roundtrip was made in less than an hour. We continued afterwards to the westernmost point of the island, Kråkenes Lighthouse, and a visit to the famous 'Kannestein' before starting the long trip back to Oslo. (some 600 km, via Fjærland, Sogndal, Valdres and Brandbu).
