  62°N 6°E (visit #1)

#1: View from confluence, north towards Volda.

(visited by Henrik Bøhle, Gjertrud Fallet and Hein Bodahl)

21-Jun-2003 -- Visiting the confluence at 62N 7E the previous day, we came from Hellesylt in Geirangerfjorden, passed Hornindalsvatnet and took the main route towards Volda. Camped in Bjørkedalen for the night. We tried to find the road leading to Laurdalssætra the previous night, but was unsucsessful. The helpful lady at the camping site explained which road to take, and the following morning we headed out from the camp at 11:00, 60 m. above sea level, found the road, paid the toll at the unmanned gate and proceeded up to Laurdalen, climbing some 450 m. (by car).

From the car we took a shortcut, to avoid the terrifying domestic bovines blocking the road. Proceeded to the river running through the valley. Walked further downstream to find a place to cross the river. Walking downstream is never a good idea however...but we found a place that was suitable. From there it was a short but steeep hike. Less than 1000 metres, but about 200 metres to climb. The mountainside was covered with birch forest, so the climb was relatively easy. When we approached the confluence (<100m from) the GPSr-bearer stumbled and the unit turned itself off. This happened a few more times. It was not easy to get a lock in a steep mountainside surrounded by other high mountains this far north.

But we found the confluence nearby, and took the required pictures. A lot easier to return to the the car than climbing the hill... The confluence is situated high in a north-facing steep mountainside with a view towards the mountains surrounding Bjørkedalen, in the southern part of 'Møre og Romsdal' county in Norway, close to Volda and Nordfjordeid. The landscape is dominated by narrow fjords and steep mountains raising from sea level and up to 1000 meters.

After the sucsessful visit we continued further west, heading to 62N 5E. We travelled along Nordfjord, passing Nordfjordeid, and not many other places before passing the bridge out to Vågsøy, and the community of Måløy.
