10-Dec-2002 -- Working in Saudi Arabia, I had a week off at the end of Ramaḍān, during the `Īd. So Lise and I decided to go to Cyprus, and by the way, to visit the two confluences of the island. This one and also 35N 34E. Today we are going to struggle to visit the most difficult-to-reach confluence of the two.

After reading the report of the first visit, done by Mark Pautz in March 2001, we knew that it would not be a piece of cake and that’s why we wanted to do this one first. On top of that, Lise wanted to go trekking in the mountains, so I knew that she would have more than her share of trekking!

On our way we stopped in Lefkara in order to buy some of their famous handmade lace work. And we learn that we are on the footsteps of Leonardo da Vinci, who preceded us by a few hundred years. The lady was selling some lace tablecloth made with patterns drawn by the famous character when he came here in 1481. By the way, the Cypriot lace is quite expensive. We spent more than US-$ 500 for a few small pieces.

We drove to Lemesos (Limassol). Once there, we tried to find an Internet Café in order to reread Mark’s report but at this early hour everything was closed. Without any details about the villages near the confluence point, we have to rely only on our GPS. We hit the road again and we covered several kilometres on winding roads along the mountainside before stopping the car on the roadside at about 300 meters from our goal. We got out of the car to evaluate the distance that separates us from our objective.

First obstacle, we have to get down a 30 meter ravine. Then cross a small river and climb on the other side. Once there we could follow an old abandoned track for about 50 meters. Then again we had to climb a steep slope. There is some vegetation to help to grip but the soil is very crumbly. And on top of that, it started to rain, which made our trek even more difficult and the terrain more slippery.

We cross another lumberjack track, but more recent. Finally we must again "play the goats" for the last 30 meters, the most difficult ones. In a pine forest with a carpet of needles so slippery that it’s hard to move along, we finally reach the spot. But there I still have to move up, down, to the left then to the right in order to see all the zeros on my GPS, and finally be able to take the picture. After taking a few more pics around, we slowly go back to the car, all muddy but proud to have accomplished our mission!
