#1: looking west from confluence

(visited by Curt Christiansen)

27-Apr-2002 -- My wife and I flew in to Billings, Mt. From Alaska on our way to her brother's wedding in North Dakota. Originally we’d planned to visit Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills but Monique was pregnant and not up to that trip so we had a few extra days. We decided to go straight to North Dakota with time for a couple of side trips for me to attempt to visit confluences. Our flight into Billings from Seattle was delayed due to a blizzard in Billings. We landed amongst snow flurries and by the time we convinced the rental company that we would not need 4-wheel drive for the "snow" it was mid-afternoon. We headed east on I-90, which splits with I-94 on the east side of Billings. We took I-94 to Miles City and checked into the Motel 6. While Monique took a nap I headed south on Montana Hwy 59, turning southwest on Mt. 332 (pic3) after about 10 miles. 332 is a good road, paved for the first few miles and then decent gravel after that. This area is mostly ranch land (pic4) with some developed crop fields and many NO TRESPASSING signs. At the point in the road where the 46th parallel crossed 332 there was a large opening in the fence, no gate, and no signs so I parked the car and walked due west about one quarter mile to the point (pic5). It was in a depression in the land, not a gully but lower than the surrounding area. I took photos of the 4 compass points (pic2 is north and pic1 is to the west) and trotted back to the car. I saw a herd of deer (pic6) on the way back to Miles City.
