  61°N 22°E (visit #1)

#1: Confluence point

(visited by Sanna Jarvinen, Ulla Eskola and Ville Jarvinen)

30-Jun-2002 -- My sister Ulla had red an article about confluences in Helsingin Sanomat daily newspaper. She showed the article to me and I was interested right away in this issue. My hobby is orienteering and I have always been interested in geography, (different) maps etc.

We noticed that the nearest unvisited confluence is located in my home town, only about 15 kilometers from my home. So we started this project by finding my old basic map of this area. But the map was from year 1986, so I got a newer one from the library. This map is a 1:20 000 basic map. The latitude 61 N and longitude 22 E are marked in the edges of the map. I checked the cross point of those latitude and longitude lines.

My friend's boyfriend converted the 61 N and 22 E coordinates to two different map datums, which were also printed in my map. So I got also coordinates in WGS84 (printed grid) and KKJ (Finnish national grid coordinate system) map datums. And all these three map datums gave the same position in the map. So we were now able to start our visit.

The confluence of 61 N 22 E is located just near by Hinnerjoki village. Hinnerjoki is part of my home town Eura. There were three of us, me, my two-years-old son Ville and my sister Ulla who was visiting her former home town Eura that weekend.

So we started our visit on Sunday morning 30th of June by driving road 43 south-west from Eura. After 15 kilometers drive we came to Hinnerjoki and we turned to left, road 210. We drove about 100 meters and turned again to left. And after driving 90 meters forward along a small road, we reached the confluence which is located on a small road in the middle of grain fields. There are some bushes by the side of the road. The road makes a 90 degree curve to south-east just after the confluence and ends at some kind of a warehouse yard.

Weather wasn't very good. It rained all the time. And we had to sit in our car a while to wait while the heaviest rain went by.
