#1: Panorama to the North

(visited by Joerg Wagner and Violetta Steger)

10-Feb-2002 -- After this great success discovering 34°S 22°E we just could not wait to do the next Confluence. Since we headed back to Capetown, after our trip down to the Garden Route, we drove the N2 in westerly direction for at least 3 hours. After passing Swellendam it was only 37 km on the N2 to Stormsvlei where we left the motorway and turned to the right following a small paved road for another 10 km.

From there we had to take a dirt road. It lead us through a picturesque landscape: hills and pastureland and after some more km we found ourselves right in the middle of a wine growing area! The valley gave us the impression to be very fruitful. Since it was Sunday the people who usually work on the vines were sitting in front of their little houses, singing and chatting. They did not seem to be very surprised when we stopped our car next to their little flower garden and asked them whether they would allow us to cross "their" piece of land.

At this point the Confluence was only 200 m away. After crossing these two gardens we went uphill. The ground was stony, only a few bushes here and there. When we reached the Confluence, only a few minutes later, we had a wonderful view over this small valley with green vines at ground level and red hills all around. After taking the obligatory photos we walked back to the car and drove to Capetown.
