08-Mar-2002 -- As soon as we knew about this project, we were interested in it and decided to visit one of the point still left to register. By chance we found out that one of them was located in the surrounding, so we took advantage of it and decided to start our route soon.

Last Friday 8 of March, Betty, Paula (her daughter), Fernando and I, left Pontevedra not very early and after two hours journey, passed A Gudiña, we left fhe highway towards A Mezquita. There, we had a look around and asked some questions to the resident and after gathering some answers about the place, how to get there and the landscape, we decided to have lunch. This was around two o´clock.

Nearby we found a nice restaurant where we had a chat and where we debated if we could make it or not. The side was pretty far away, three kilometers distance and the GPS pointed to a climbed hill that would increase the difficulty. So with the possibility of failure in our mind, we started the attempt.

During the route from “A Mezquita” to “San simon de Santigoso” we still had to ask a shepherd about the way but we hesitated. We wanted to get closer to our goal but we did not know if we had the sheep dog´s allowance. The shepherd indicated a way at the end of “Santigoso” but he said we could not run over it by car. Really?

The way leaves the village climbing to a hill towards South. This way is in a very good state but the ground is very slippery so we had to hike carefully. Finally, we could save a reasonable distance.

We keep on walking along the curving route getting closer and closer. There were still 500 m. Left. The last part was not very complicated, the thicket was not very high so we could walk easily. Finally at 5.00 pm the group reached the top and we celebrated, taking some pictures of the beautiful place.

It is a great beautyplace which is known as “El marmeiral” and belongs to the “Castromil Church” situated at East. It is located at the limit with “Zamora” at very short distance from Portugal. We were rounded by the “Marmeiral Mountain” at North and West. At East you can also sight “Sierra de la Culebra” full of eolic engines and with snowed peaks. At south Portugal can be sighted. We will meet it another time.

The landscape is very opened and full of mountains but their tops are rounded by the erosion. There are too many wolves, in fact it is an area that seems to be created for them and it is very close to “sierra de la Culebra”, a wolve´s area by excellence.

The ground is granite and the vegetation that grows is medium high thicket, very degraded mainly caused by fires. It is made up of “piornos” and “escobones” with white and yellow flowers, “carquexia” and some “cistacea” like “the jaguarzo blanco” among others. Also we could see some small forests of oak “Melojo”.

¿Qué no?
