02-Mar-2002 -- Argentinian Degree Confluence hunt!

Guillermo, Pablito, María, Jorge, Jorgito, Norma, Ariel, Gabriela, Gonzalo, Karina, Graciela, Colo y Javier

March 2 2002 - Argentinian Degree Confluence hunt!

This is the most austral Argentine Degree Confluence (except for Antarctica) and it is located on the Island of Tierra del Fuego, i.e., the end of the American Continent.

Our plan to hunt this confluence is created by a group of friends, all belonging to www.Patagonia4x4.com.ar, web page gathering 4WD enthusiasts from the whole country.

This confluence is located near the district of Rio Grande, but in this hunting not only there were inhabitants of this district but also from Ushuaia. (We must point out here that these are the two main cities of the Island of Tierra del Fuego which are separated by the Andes Mountain Range).

In order to keep the schedule a meeting point was set at the entrance of Complementary Road "B" and National Route "3" at 11:00 a.m. March 2 2002, Saturday.

The Ushuaia group, formed by two vehicles (Isuzu Trooper and Chevrolet LUV), grouped together three families: the Rocca Family, including only five-years-old Jorgito Rocca, the Tapia Family and Karina, Gonzalo y Claudia They left Ushuaia early to endure the crossing of the Andes Range (Garibaldi Pass) and to meet there the Rio Grande group, formed by the Ainsworth Family (including little six-years-old Pablito Ainsworth) in a Sanhong Muzzo and Juan Jose Stagnaro y Javier Nebreda in a Suzuki Samuray.

Half an hour after the time set and without any major inconveniences both groups met at the meeting point and left by complementary Road "E" towards the hunt of the most austral Argentinean confluence.

We traveled half an hour along a secondary road. GPS read we should follow through an open field to get to our confluence. After searching for a door gate in order to enter the place (these are private fields for cattle exploitation), we set our vehicles upon the rough Tierra del Fuego land, which is a mixture of soil, peat (a million-year-old organic material with very high ability for water absorbtion) and compact vegetation knolls, all this causing the vehicles to test their suspensions and engines.

After 1.2 km along this land we got to the site set. Enlightened by a beautiful Fueguino sun we took the necessary pictures upon the GPSs (Garmin III+ and 176 C and a notebook with Oziexplorer as navigation support) and we began our way back home along the same road, but previously stopping to have lunch all together and exchange anecdotes.

Cordial greetings to everybody and we will go on hunting confluences along these latitudes.

Guillermo, Pablito, Maria, Jorge, Jorgito, Norma, Ariel, Gabriela, Gonzalo, Karina, Graciela, Colo y Javier.
