(visited by Jean-Michel Weil and Daniel Weil)

08-Oct-2001 -- We recently visited Queensland, driving from Cairns to Brisbane. We found that there was an unvisited confluence degree between the cities of Gin Gin and Bundaberg.

At the closest point to the main road, the GPS showed a distance to the confluence point of less than 2 km, so we thought it will be easy to reach it. The problem is that the area is mainly build up with large sugar cane fields. There is no direct access to the targeted point. Finally we reached a small house which seemed to be the one of the field owner. While trying to contact him we were welcomed by three big and fortunately friendly dogs!

We asked the farmer for the authorization to visit his fields. He first was surprised that tourists came in such a remote area to take pictures. We talked a while together, he gave us a lot of informations about his job and the sugar cane. There are long trains carrying heavy cane loads, circulating on the narrow railways in the countryside. He told us that the central control station knows the precise location of each with help of the GPS technology! He added that usually there is a nice view to the mountain ranges nearby. Unfortunately the air was a little bit misty on this 8 of October 2001 at 1:00 PM due to huge burnings of cane fields, usual in that season.

The confluence spot is located at 800m from the farmhouse where we had parked the car. We followed the narrow sugar cane railway path toward east and reached our destination easily after a 15 minute walk.

GPS data at destination:

  • The accuracy was 5m.
  • The altitude displayed was around 88m.
  • The car was parked at S25.00662 E151.99578.
  • Points of interest in the area: What is done with all that sugar cane? To find the answer visit the Rum distillery which is one of the main attractions of the nearby Bundaberg city. Attention: follow carefully the written advice on the admittance ticket, see picture! As Rum and Cocktails are served, preferably visit the distillery AFTER searching for the confluence point.
