#1: Looking east with back to the confluence point

27-Aug-2001 -- I stumbled upon this site by accident a few months ago, and decided to try my hand at visiting a confluence site while visiting friends in Tampa while on holiday recently.

Armed with my trusty Garmin, my wife who is now used to my madcap schemes and two bored daughters (16 & 18) - who could think of a hundred other things they would rather do while on holiday, we set off along I4 from Tampa to Orlando.

"Are you sure you know where you are going" my wife asked as I reassured her for the tenth time "it is just a bit further before we turn off...". After quitting I4 and heading off down the County Line road, we soon found the Lakeland Linder regional airport (interesting aside, they are building a new restaurant area that looks like it would seat a couple of hundred people!).

"We are almost there" I cheerfully announce, "well, within a mile or so anyway, if we take a left here, then left at those lights...we should be just about there, well maybe a COUPLE of more turns..."

Three left turns later and we pull up beside a fenced in pool, about 400 yards short of the toll-booths. "We're here!" to which the replies were somewhat unprintable but the gist of them was "is this IT!". Some people have no sense of adventure nowadays. Looking East with my back to the confluence point.

I got out of the car and had a walk up and down. I could get to exactly 82d 0m 0s West but no closer than 27d 59m 59.2s North. The Garmin locked to 10 satellites, showed the accuracy as being 13 feet. I was just about to hop over the fence (the only sign I saw was about having to make good the repairs if you damaged some hidden tv/cable stuff in the ground.)

My wife then kindly pointed out that in Florida if water is fenced off from the highway then there is usually a good reason - oh yes, forgot about those alligators, don't get them in England you see.
