#1: Looking North From CP

(visited by Peter Berghs)

30-Jun-2001 -- The Canada Day long weekend was a good one for confluence hunting. The weather promised to be fairly good, I had three days off work, and the motorbike was ready to go! After packing up my camping supplies I hit the road at about 10:00 AM aiming for my first confluence target at 50N 111W. Cool temperatures made the run east on the Trans-Canada Highway enjoyable and in no time I was turning south on Route 875. This road was lined with fields of Alfalfa in full bloom and the air was like perfume. Most of the fields had little huts set up ever 500 feet to provide shelter for the leaf-cutter bees used to ensure that the alfalfa gets pollinated properly.

Eventually I reached the town of Bow Island, perfectly located to provide gasoline for the bike and ice cream for the pilot. Dodging north on 885 I started closing in on the CP. After a short detour on a canal road too far to the east I found a grid road that would lead me onto a gas well access path just east of the point. A short trip onto the pasture and I was on it.

The CP is located in a cattle pasture high above the South Saskatchewan River. My motorcycle helmet marks the spot. The other pictures show the views to the north, south, east and west, the standard GPS shot, and a ravine leading down to the river. All in all it was an enjoyable and trouble-free hunt.
