#1: View of the point

(visited by Michael Leismann and Gabriele Leismann)

14-Jun-2001 -- During our vacation we stayed a few days in Haparanda, at the border between Sweden and Finland. One day we made a long tour. We drove to the north along the Thorne Älv, and back to the south along the Kalix Älv.

Both rivers are completely in their natural condition, they have never been regulated. So this is a very interesting landscape. And many people come here for fishing.

The roads to the point lead through a very interesting landscape. On the way we saw Whooper Swans and Curlews.

At the end we had to follow small forest trails, mainly built for the forest industry. By car we could get to about 500 meters. These last 500 meters were not easy to walk, the terrain was very wet and soft. Many elk tracks and droppings were on the ground.

The point itself lies within a dense forest. The terrain there is very similar in all directions, and after reaching the point I had completely lost my orientation.

Without GPS I would never have found it, but without GPS I would never have gone in. I was very happy about having taken a waypoint at the car.

Near the point a Redwing seemed to have its nest. It tried to avert me by simulating a broken wing and flapping over the ground. So I hurried up with the photos, I did not want to disturb it to long.
