#1: An italian grain field

(visited by Michael Haberl, Hans Augdoppler and Sveta Sorokina)

01-May-2001 -- On the May 1, 2001, a very fine day (sun was shining, and the temperature was 28C), we visited this point on our earth. We went 200 km in the south of Italia in a very impressive countryside with rather high and strange looking mountains. The last part of our trip was in the Pollino national park We drove over steep hills and on small roads to reach a village called Castellucci Inferiore.

Our map showed that the crossing point is near to this village. First it was very easy to go, it seems that one road goes directly to our target. As we stopped the car and started to go we thought this point is directly behind a pizzeria where we can afterwards celebrate our success, but as we went behind the pizzeria a very angry dog avoided our easy trip. So it was necessary for us the make a longer walk around the hill to reach our goal.

There we had the next surprise. We met Guiseppe a really Italian native. Directly in front of his house in a grain field, which was not possible for us to enter, we found the famous point. Our distance was approximately 20 m to the crossing point.

Afterwards Guiseppe invited us to a cup of coffee. He is a very lonely man, so he was happy about the opportunity to speak with us or better to us (we can not speak Italian so we did not understand very much). He tried to explain to us the history of his life. His wife died some years ago and since then he lives alone in his house and thinks very often on his wife. He showed us a lot of photos of her. His children are living in Roma. To meet this man was an interesting event for us. He invited us to come again, when we are in this part of Italia.

On our journey back we were thinking how much can happen when you go to such a special point.
