23-Jun-2020 – Having read the reports of two visitors to this confluence, I still didn't not understand how they got to this point and what is the most convenient way. From Yakov Stepanov's report about his incomplete visit, I at least understood the starting point, 57°00'46''N 34°03'E and considered it as the starting point for me. At this place, from the road between the villages of Taraskovo and Ramenye at an acute angle there is a loggers' road led to the west, and that's where I parked. It was 3.4 km beeline distance to my target from here.

But of course, I didn't want to go in a straight line. My wife and me had a snack and decided to move on together. I didn't want to leave her alone among hordes of horseflies. The path was not easy. I planned to move in a zigzag along the linear landmarks visible on satellite images: first, almost westward along a forest road to the point 57°00'25.5''N 33°59'30''E, then southeast along the clearing to the point 57°00'07''N 34°00'06''E and then through the forest in a straight line in the south-west direction to the target, 57°N 34°E. The length of these three straight-line sections is 4.7 km, but since the road is not straight, it turned out to be almost 5 and a half kilometres one way.

The first section was an old (probably loggers') road. Most likely it was not used for a long time, several years ago I think. Somewhere the road was swampy, sometimes you had to go along the causeway. In some places we had to jump over small puddles or bypass large ones. The path passed under the continuous hum of mosquitoes, and with horseflies covered our trousers. But since the clothes were smart, the sleeves were long, then soon we no longer paid attention to insects.

Finally we got to a clearing. I thought there was a power line running along it, but there were no poles. The clearing was rather overgrown and in some places it was also swampy. It turned out that the Torzhok – Ostashkov gas pipeline passes through here, but its path is rather poorly maintained, at least compared to the glade, where the confluence 56°N 34°E is located one degree south.

At the end of the second segment, it was necessary to force the brook and this caused my fears, because I did not want to subject my spouse to trials. But, fortunately, it was enough just to step over the brook. And the last, forest segment of our way was not difficult. The forest was dry, without blockages. The exact confluence spot is located in a mixed forest among firs and aspens. Mountain ash also present.

The weather was excellent, the hike was successful, but the last one and a half kilometres of the way back turned out to be hard to my wife.
