#1: The Confluence from 90 m Distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

26-Jun-2020 -- This report is the sixth out of eight reports reaching confluence points during a 5-day bicycle trip (901 km) from Tallinn to Riga. The story starts at 59°N 26°E and continues from 58°N 25°E.

After camping at a remote lake called “spanderu ezers” about 10 km south of Rauna, I continued cycling in south-eastern direction until I reached the confluence area in the later morning.

The confluence is located 400 m from the main road as the crows fly. I hid my bicycle at the high grass at the roadside and walked across a meadow into a forest. The exact location of the confluence is in a small lake named “Govenis” about 90 m from the nearest shore. There is an easy access to the nearest point, but this would require passing through private land. So I rather hiked along the lake shore until I was 90 m from the point.

There I noticed an old rowing boat. It looked chained, but a close look obtained that there was no lock. I first had to scoop out a lot of water for about 10 minutes. Then I cautiously pushed the boat into the water. I wasn’t sure if it would sink immediately if I hopped in, so I secured my mobile phone in a waterproof bag first. The boat turned out safe and I managed to navigate to the exact location. I am actually a bit proud to have reached an all-zero shot with 2 m accuracy – which is probably unprecedented on board of a boat (unless you proof me to be wrong).

After the confluence visit, I had a swim in the lake and also stayed a bit at the beautiful lake. If you know me, you would find it strange, as I normally don’t tend to hang out at places. I continued cycling westwards towards my final destination Riga and camped 500 m from 57°N 25°E.
