15-Jul-2019 -- This is the seventh out of eight reports reaching or attempting confluence points during a 2-week bicycle trip around Iceland. The story starts at 65°N 20°W and continues from 66°N 16°W.
The next day I got up at 3:00 AM and started cycling at 4:45 AM from Torshöfn. I followed the coastal road for about 2 hours, until I reached the nearest point from the road (3.5 km as the crows fly).
I parked my bike directly at the unsealed coastal road and began a very wet, cold, exhausting hike through the swamp and dense fog. Normally I enjoy hiking a lot, but this time, it wasn’t easy to find joy. At the beginning I followed a marooned fence. The ground was very uneven such that I had either to step into ankle-deep water or on soft tufts of grass. In the second part of the trip the terrain was rising upwards. I left the swamp, but the wet grass kept my feet wet.
At the confluence, there was not much to see but fog. The only feature visible in the cardinal direction pictures is the moss and lichen on the ground. But this is the philosophy of confluence.org: documenting as it is, without a bias for taking the best pictures on sunny days only.
After the visit, I continued the coastal road and spent the night in a guesthouse 10 km from Vopnafjördur.
