09-Sep-2000 -- The trip to this point was a bit long but surprisingly easy. I needed to deliver some supplies for a project near Delta Jct. My dad wanted to watch the Palmer at North Pole High School football game near Fairbanks. We left from Palmer at 1pm on Friday and traveled east on the Glenn Hwy (AK #1), turning north at Glennallen onto the Richardson Hwy (AK #4). After dinner in Delta Jct. we headed southeast on the ALCAN (AK #2) for 30 miles and turned north on the gravel New Cummings Rd. At about the 7 mile mark we turned off onto an other gravel road for 3 miles which deterioted to a dirt two -track path that led us the last mile to the Tanana River landing point. We stayed the night in the truck and met our party at 9am saturday, by 10 we were off in search of N64 W145. The New Cummings Road is one of the many roads near Delta that was put in by the state in the early 80's in an effort to jump-start farming in the state, specifically this area grows a lot of barley. This road is reasonably maintained with a few farms still making a go of it. Just as we were nearing the point where we must decide whether to continue on the road around the next bend or park and walk, we came to a road running due east that brought us to within 0.2 miles of the point. The point appeared to be between an active barley field and one cleared years ago but now left for the brush to reclaim. We parked off the road and started walking north on the edge of the active field. The point turned out to be on the other side of stump row between the two fields, so we had to climb over the downed trees to reach the point. Due to the brush, views from the point were not very good. We continued on to Fairbanks and caught the last 3 quarters of the game, won easily by Palmer. After the game we said hi to my brother (Palmer's head coach) and headed back to Anchorage on the Parks Hwy (AK #3). We got back to Palmer at about midnight on Saturday We had traveled approximately 800 miles.
