28-Jun-2015 – I have not been in the homeland for a long time. I have checked confluence.org for virgin confluences in Kirovskaya oblast' before my departure. I have noticed the incomplete visit made by Jesse Eisenberg and his friends. I do not want to say that he is my favorite actor, but a visit to this confluence has acquired additional interest. I decided first to complete this CP, and then possibly to visit several virgin confluences along 59°N.

Being in Moscow, I have studied maps and satellite images. Fortunately, there are now quite good pictures of the Kirov region. As far as I remember, even 5 years ago, they were just of terrible quality. Now you can easily see the dirt roads, the type of vegetation in the forest and so on.

A path to the CP seemed pretty simple: first, the road to Zuevka, then turn in the direction of Bogorodskoye and the road to Lema. Just a couple miles south of Lema there is a turn to the dirt road towards Pitim village. Then the road turns to the south and crosses Pitim river by the bridge, then the road goes to the Volok forest, where the confluence is located.

A few words about the Volok forest. Satellite images show that industrial logging is carried out there periodically. The CP is located on the territory of one of the old loggings.

I set off about noon on June 28. The road from Kirovo-Chepetsk to Zuevka was pretty good, but after turning to Bogorodskoye its quality gradually decreased. After passing the turn to Ryabovo the quality of the road reduced so much that it was necessary to slow down my car to 30-40 kmph. The asphalt paving ended after Lema village, the poor clay dirt road began. I was very lucky that there was no rain for a few days and the passage onto this road was pretty safe. You can see the terrible view of this road after the rain in the pictures from the previous visit.

The route to the CP seemed quite simple for me, so I was too lazy to draw the track and load it into my GPS device. As a result, after the passage of Lema I made a wrong turn and wandered a long time in the fields of oats (or something else?). At least I have found that these fields can be passed by car. After a while, I found the right way and quickly got to the edge of the Volok forest. On the last couple of miles on the way to the forest the road passes through another field, this road can be impassable after the rain. The distance between the edge of the forest and the confluence point is about 3 km.

Further on I obviously overestimated off-road abilities of my car. After a little investigation I found a road along the edge of old forest. This road was overgrown by grass and led further towards the confluence point. I decided to drive onto this road. Up to a certain moment, everything was going well, but about in one kilometer from the confluence point my car got stuck in the damp lowlands. My car is not suited for off-road driving and I am not a very skilled driver. As a result, I spent about an hour trying to get out, but to no avail. I realized that I can't retrieve the car on my own, and went to the confluence afoot.

Almost immediately I came across fresh bear's footprints. It was a bit anxious, so I went straight to the target through the depths of the forest. It turned out that the forest logging on the site has overgrown significantly compared with the satellite images. The height of the trees (mostly birches) was about 5 meters, and they grew quite closely that made my way quite difficult. Closer to the confluence spot there is a relict forest plot with a number of deadfall trees, but it was still more passable than the recent logging. Also I met a small area of forest with pine trees planted in neat rows. It would be interesting to know whether the birch trees are also planted there, or they are self-seeding.

The integer degree intersection is located in a very beautiful birch forest. I got there at about 6 pm. I made a few photos of the area and the GPS-receiver with the coordinates reading, and then went back to the car. But this time I walked not by the shortest way, but onto an overgrown road which led me straight to the car.

It was quite disappointing to see that the road on which my car got stuck, led almost directly to the confluence point. Along the way, I several times saw the grass, crumpled by large animals. Somewhere I saw traces of wild boars, but it is possible that there were also larger animals, frightened by my visit.

As soon as I returned to my car, I made some more attempts to get it out, but again to no avail. Finally I decided to get out on foot and find some help in Lema. On the way back through the field I met some traces of wild boar and elk. Also I met a white hare crossing the field, probably he was born in the spring and had not shed yet. All the way some birds circled over my head; in the silence I could hear their wings cutting the air.

After crossing the bridge over Pitim river my phone found the network, and I managed to contact to my parents and reported the situation. My walk to Lema could take a couple of hours, but fortunately I met a passing car with four men with metal detectors and their dog. They spent the whole day in the abandoned villages in search of coins and other artefacts, and at sunset they were returning to Lema.

I was brought up to Lema, but to my surprise there is no mobile net in this village. I had to make a call from the desk phone inside the house of one of the locals. We agreed with my parents that they will arrive in Lema, and then we will try to get out my car. There was some time to wander through the village. I realized that this is the village with a ruined church, which appears in the photographs from previous visit.

About an hour later my parents came, and we went back towards the confluence point. It was completely dark and the road looked quite impassable, especially inside the forest. Fortunately, my parents have four-wheel-drive car and, not without difficulty, we got out my car and drove to Kirovo-Chepetsk town.

It was nearly midnight, and completely dark, so on the way back near Lema my car hit the hole in the road at full speed and struck the bottom of the engine. I realized this damage only in Zuevka when I stopped at a gas station. The remains of engine oil leaked out and the rest of the way to the house my parents towed my car with a rope. As a result, my car was in the repair about a week, and I had no time to visit the 59°N points.

I was at home about 3 am. Certainly this option is not part of my plans, because this day was my mother's jubilee. But at least it is something to remember. I like confluence hunting!
