#1: The Confluence from 50 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

14-May-2015 -- This is the 12th out of 12 reports reaching confluence points along the 51°N-line. The story starts from 51°N 14°E.

Coming from 51°N 4°E, we reached this confluence at 8 PM after a drive of 1 hour and 24 minutes in western direction. On little county roads we came as close as 30 m to the confluence point. We parked in front of the house of the Dezilter family. The house is at a junction of the three roads Hazewindstraat, Zuidbosstraat, and Zuidstraat. First we thought that the confluence might be inside the fence on private land. Therefore we rang the bell to ask for permission to enter the plot. But nobody was at home. Just for curiosity, we went around the plot and found out, that the exact location of the confluence is right inside the hedge at the plot boundary on the backside.

The owners of the confluence are aware of their special location. A sign on the wall of the house mentions the degrees 51°N 3°O. Another sign explicitly mentions that there is the intersection of these integer valued lines. One could say, that the owners are proud of their special location!

We had now visited 12 confluence points this day. We had not imagined that everything could go so smooth that we would actually get so far. So we had not planned or prepared for another confluence. The time would have allowed visiting another confluence easily, because it would not get dark before 10 PM. But we thought that the next confluence point 51°N 2°E would be located in the open sea and therefore not be accessible. Only later we found out that this is not exactly true: this point is in the intertidal mudflats and can be easily visited during low tide. What a mistake! We had missed a great finish at the beach with a 13th visit of a confluence point.
