14-Aug-2014 -- Our next mission of the day was visiting confluence 29S 132E. Passing the 29th meridian, we continued along for several kilometres before turning onto the track leading back to the Northeast and a large clay pan. We followed this back to the 29 degree meridian and then turned west into the scrub to complete the last 2.2 kilometres to our destination. It started easily enough winding our way across a mulga woodland but the country soon degenerated into thick scrub and a twisting turning route for us as we negotiated dead timber and soft sand.

As I always knew it would, the confluence appeared to be on a dune top so we made it to within 120 metres and then completed the final distance on foot. The flies were absolutely atrocious, so fly nets were donned over the hats as we headed off. It took a little bit of waltzing to get the final seconds to tick over to zero but eventually we got there.

This is mulga and acacia scrub country with the confluence seated in the middle of an acacia bush.

This country is deeply sacred to the local Maralinga people. Permission is required to travel the Maralinga - Emu Road and to attend the clay pan area, site of the aboriginal stonehenge. Access can be sought through Mr. Robin Mathews at Maralinga. A fee for access applies. Our group attended with full permissions of the Maralinga traditional owners.
