#1: The Confluence from 20 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

30-Nov-2014 -- This is the second out of 2 reports reaching confluence points in Central France.

The story starts from 45°N 2°E.

Due to the steep mountains, progress on cycling to this Confluence was slow. In the afternoon it became clear that I won’t reach the Confluence before nightfall. When I reached the little town Pierrefort (25 km from the CP) I stayed for the night.

The next morning, I started one hour before sunrise, such that I reached the Confluence just with enough daylight to take acceptable pictures. The Confluence is located 1 km from the village Les Ternes with its castle from 1573.

The exact location is on an open meadow, 230 m from a little asphalt road. The walk was wetting my shoes, since it had rained cats and dogs for several weeks and the soil was still soaked with water. Again, the ground was covered with cow pats. Standing on the Confluence, the highest mountain of the Massif Central can be seen in 20 km distance: the 1855 m high Plomb du Cantal (at the horizon of the view to the West).

After the documentation I cycled northwards, catching my last train to Zurich in Clermont Ferrand at 5 PM. Unfortunately, the train was overcrowded such that the doors wouldn't close. When after 10 minutes the doors had finally been closed, there was no authorization for the train to start due to security issues. To make a long story short: I missed my connection in Lyon and ended up spending the night in Bern in a hotel paid by the SNCF.
